Religious Accommodations

University employees are entitled to reasonable workplace accommodations on the basis of religious beliefs, observances, and practices. This includes student employees seeking job-related accommodations. Please click the button above to initiate your request, or read below for answers to frequently asked questions.

What is a “reasonable accommodation”?

A reasonable accommodation is a change to a job-related activity, policy or practice to ensure that a person can perform their essential job functions, access the privileges and benefits of employment, and apply/interview for a job, while also following their religious beliefs and practices.

Some examples of religious accommodations may include:

  • Schedule changes based on religious holidays or observances.
  • Exceptions to a dress code.
  • Modifications to workplace policies or practices.

A reasonable accommodation must not prevent the employee from performing their essential job functions, create a health or safety risk, or pose an undue hardship for the university.

How do I request a religious accommodation?

Click the button above to go to the request form that you can use to submit your accommodation request. You can also contact us at accessibility@illinois.edu or by calling (217) 333-0885 option #1.

On the request form, you will be asked to describe the accommodation you are seeking and to confirm that your request is based on your sincerely-held religious beliefs. You are not required to submit proof from a religious authority or text to show that your belief is valid, and it does not matter whether your belief/practice is well-known or associated with an established church or denomination.

After you submit the form, a member of our team will contact you to discuss your request and the next steps. We may ask you for additional detail if it is needed for us to fully understand the practical aspects of your request, such as the hours or days when you will need to be absent from work.

What if I am concerned about discrimination or retaliation?

Discrimination, harassment, and retaliation against any person based on religion are prohibited under university policy and federal and state laws. This can include failing to provide a reasonable accommodation or retaliating against a person because they have requested an accommodation.

To learn more or submit a report, please see our section on Discrimination and Harassment.
